Everyone knows the pearl as a product of the oyster, but there is more to this dainty product. It is a jewel that begins as an unwanted intruder, but then grows into one of the jewelry industry's most elegant and luxurious accessories. With a rich history, the pearl has become an integral part of today's fashion scene. Perceptions of the pearl have kept changing throughout the ages. What appears on the surface to be just a status image turns out to be a source of symbolic meanings. By fictitiously adding a layer to the exhibition each time, you are taken into the transitory meaning of this accessory.
At a time when we are re-evaluating history, this story has renewed relevance. By showing the pearl in different contexts, this exhibition (created for The Hermitage Amsterdam) reveals the high-profile history of this product and shows it in a whole new light.
